A cable gland is the fitting that holds a cable where it enters a DB board, isolator, motor or junction box. It grips the cable, seals out dust and water and, on armoured cable, clamps and earths the steel wire armour. Using the right gland is a small detail that makes a big difference to safety and reliability. ElectricalCable.co.za is a free quote-request service: tell us which cable glands you need and where you are, and we send your request to an independent electrical wholesaler or contractor in your area who quotes you directly. We do not sell glands ourselves.

Types of cable gland

  • Armoured cable glands: brass or nickel-plated brass glands that clamp the steel wire armour and provide an earth path, in indoor (single seal) and outdoor (double seal) versions
  • Nylon (polyamide) glands: light, corrosion-proof glands for unarmoured PVC cables, flex and solar cable on enclosures and inverters
  • Stainless steel glands: for coastal, food and chemical plants
  • Hazardous-area glands: certified glands for flameproof equipment on mines, fuel sites and process plants

Cable gland size chart basics

A cable gland size chart matches the gland to two things: the cable's overall outer diameter and, on armoured cable, the armour wire size. The entry thread, usually metric such as M20, M25, M32, M40 or M50, must also match the hole in the box or board. Because two cables with the same mm² rating can have different outer diameters depending on construction and core count, an electrical cable gland size chart is a guide only. The safest approach is to give the supplier the exact cable size, number of cores and whether it is armoured, and let them select the gland.

Shrouds, earth tags and accessories

Armoured glands are normally ordered with a PVC or rubber shroud that covers the gland and keeps water out, plus an earth tag to bond the armour to the earth bar. Locknuts, sealing washers and reducers complete the fitting. Outdoors and in wet areas, choose glands with a suitable IP rating and a double seal. Terminating armoured cable and bonding it to earth is fixed wiring work, so it should be done by a registered electrician as part of a SANS 10142-1 compliant installation with a COC.

What affects cable gland prices

Price depends on the material, the size, indoor or outdoor type, whether shrouds and earth tags are included, and quantity. Brass and stainless glands cost more than nylon, and certified hazardous-area glands more again. Contractors buying glands for a whole project usually get a better rate than one-off buyers. List every cable you need to terminate, and you will get an accurate quote with the right glands in one go.

Comparing cable glands prices

Cable prices change with the copper price, size, brand and quantity. When quotes arrive, check:

  • Exact specification: size in mm², cores, conductor, insulation, armour and voltage rating.
  • Quantity: cut length or full drum, and whether the drum deposit is refundable.
  • Standards: SABS-marked cable to the relevant SANS standard, not unmarked imports.
  • Delivery: lead time, delivery to site and offloading of heavy drums.

What to include in your request

  • Cable size, number of cores and whether it is armoured
  • Outer diameter of the cable if you can measure it
  • Indoor, outdoor, coastal or hazardous-area use
  • Quantity of each size, and whether shrouds and earth tags are needed
  • Your suburb and when you need delivery

Frequently asked questions

Do you sell cable glands?
No. ElectricalCable.co.za is a free quote-request service. We pass your request to an independent electrical wholesaler or contractor near you, who quotes you directly for the cable glands and accessories you need.
How do I choose the right cable gland size?
Measure or confirm the cable's outer diameter, note whether it is armoured and give the conductor size and number of cores. A supplier will match these to the gland and the entry thread. A cable gland size chart helps, but cable construction varies, so check before ordering.
What is the difference between indoor and outdoor armoured glands?
Indoor glands seal the outer sheath only lightly and are for dry areas. Outdoor glands have an extra seal on the inner bedding as well as the outer sheath, keeping water out of the armour and the equipment. Use outdoor glands wherever there is rain, washdown or condensation.
Do I need a shroud on a cable gland?
A shroud is not always required, but it is recommended on armoured cable glands, especially outdoors. It covers the gland, keeps moisture and dirt out and gives a neat finish. Most suppliers quote glands and shrouds together.
