A cable is only as good as its connections. Electrical wire connectors and cable lugs join conductors to each other and to terminals, breakers, busbars and batteries, and a poor joint is one of the most common causes of overheating and faults. ElectricalCable.co.za is a free quote-request service: tell us which connectors and lugs you need, the cable sizes and quantities, and where you are, and we send your request to an independent electrical wholesaler or contractor in your area who quotes you directly. We do not sell connectors ourselves, and there is no obligation to accept a quote.

Types of cable lugs

  • Copper tube lugs: plain or tinned, crimped onto copper cable for DB boards, inverters and battery banks
  • Bimetallic (copper-aluminium) lugs: for terminating aluminium cable onto copper busbars without galvanic corrosion
  • Aluminium lugs: for aluminium cable onto aluminium terminals
  • Insulated crimp terminals: ring, fork and pin terminals for smaller wires in panels
  • Mechanical (bolted) lugs: shear-bolt lugs that need no crimping tool

Lugs are matched to the cable size in mm² and the stud or bolt size of the terminal.

Electrical cable connectors and joints

For joining and terminating smaller wires, common electrical cable connectors include connector strips, lever connectors, twist-on connectors, crimp butt connectors and bootlace ferrules, which stop fine-strand flex from fraying in breaker and DIN-rail terminals. Larger cables are joined with crimp or shear-bolt in-line connectors inside a resin or heat-shrink cable joint kit. Solar PV systems use dedicated DC connectors rated for the panel voltage. Whatever the type, the connector must be rated for the cable size, current and voltage.

Waterproof and outdoor connectors

Outdoor lights, garden pumps, boreholes and gate motors need an electrical cable connector waterproof enough for the conditions. Options include gel-filled connectors, IP-rated junction boxes, heat-shrink joints with adhesive lining and resin joint kits for underground cable. Any joint on fixed wiring, especially outdoors or underground, must be made by a registered electrician, who will crimp with the correct tool and test the circuit before issuing a COC. Never twist wires together and tape them as a permanent connection.

What affects the price

Prices depend on the material (copper, tinned copper, aluminium or bimetal), the cable size, whether the lug or connector is insulated, the IP rating and the quantity. Copper prices move, so lug prices change too. Crimping tools, heat shrink and joint kits add to the order. Buying boxes of the sizes you use most is usually more economical. Send a list of cable sizes and quantities and a supplier can quote you accurately.

Comparing cable lugs and connectors prices

Cable prices change with the copper price, size, brand and quantity. When quotes arrive, check:

  • Exact specification: size in mm², cores, conductor, insulation, armour and voltage rating.
  • Quantity: cut length or full drum, and whether the drum deposit is refundable.
  • Standards: SABS-marked cable to the relevant SANS standard, not unmarked imports.
  • Delivery: lead time, delivery to site and offloading of heavy drums.

What to include in your request

  • Type of lug or connector and the material (copper, aluminium or bimetal)
  • Cable size in mm² and the stud or bolt size of each terminal
  • Quantity of each size, or boxes of the most-used sizes
  • Indoor, outdoor, underground or battery and solar use
  • Whether you also need crimping tools, heat shrink or joint kits

Frequently asked questions

Do you sell electrical wire connectors?
No. ElectricalCable.co.za is a free quote-request service. We pass your request for electrical wire connectors South Africa-wide to an independent electrical wholesaler or contractor near you, who quotes you directly.
What size cable lug do I need?
Match the lug to the cable's conductor size in mm², for example a 16 mm² lug for 16 mm² cable, and to the stud or bolt size of the terminal it fits onto. For aluminium cable on copper terminals, use bimetallic lugs. Include both sizes in your quote request.
Can I crimp cable lugs with pliers?
No. Lugs need the correct crimping tool and die for their size, usually a hexagonal crimp. A poor crimp can loosen, heat up and fail, especially on inverter and battery cables carrying high current. A registered electrician has the right tools for the job.
What is a waterproof cable connector?
It is a connector or joint sealed against moisture, such as a gel-filled connector, an adhesive-lined heat-shrink joint, a resin joint kit or an IP-rated junction box. Choose one rated for the location, especially for outdoor lights, pumps and underground cable.
