Every new house, office or factory needs a route for its wiring, and conduit pipe is what carries and protects it. On a typical build, PVC electrical conduit is built into walls and slabs before plastering, and house wire is pulled through later. ElectricalCable.co.za is a free quote-request service: tell us the conduit you need, the sizes, quantities and where you are, and we send your request to an independent electrical wholesaler or contractor in your area who quotes you directly. We do not sell conduit ourselves, and there is no obligation to accept a quote.
Types of electrical conduit
- Rigid PVC conduit: the everyday choice for homes and offices, light enough to cut with a hacksaw and joined with solvent cement or push-fit couplers
- Flexible conduit: corrugated plastic or PVC-coated steel flex for awkward bends, connections to motors and pumps, and ceiling drops
- Steel conduit: galvanised or black enamel, used where cables need mechanical protection in factories, plant rooms and exposed runs
- Underground sleeves: heavier HDPE or PVC pipe laid in trenches so cable can be pulled or replaced later
Conduit sizes: 20 mm, 25 mm and up
Conduit pipe 20mm is the most used size in South African homes, carrying light and plug circuits. 25mm conduit takes more or thicker wires, such as stove and geyser circuits or a feed to a sub-board, and 32 mm, 40 mm and 50 mm sizes are used for sub-mains and larger runs. Rigid conduit is usually sold in straight lengths, with light, medium and heavy-duty wall thicknesses. The electrician must leave enough space in the pipe for the wires to be drawn in without damage and to stay cool, so do not try to squeeze extra circuits into an undersized conduit.
Fittings and accessories
Conduit is only part of the order. You will also need couplers, bends, junction boxes, inspection tees, adaptors, saddles and solvent cement, plus switch and plug boxes for each point. Draw wire or a fish tape makes pulling easier later. For outdoor runs, choose UV-stabilised conduit or protect it, because ordinary PVC goes brittle in strong sun. Wiring in conduit is fixed wiring, so it must be installed and signed off by a registered electrician who can issue a Certificate of Compliance (COC).
What drives conduit pipe price
The conduit pipe price depends on the material, diameter and wall thickness, whether it is rigid or flexible, and how many fittings and boxes the job needs. Buying full bundles for a whole build usually works out better than buying lengths a few at a time. Delivery to site and whether you also want the electrician to install it and pull the wire will change the total. A room-by-room list of points helps a supplier give you an accurate quote.
Comparing electrical conduit prices
Cable prices change with the copper price, size, brand and quantity. When quotes arrive, check:
- Exact specification: size in mm², cores, conductor, insulation, armour and voltage rating.
- Quantity: cut length or full drum, and whether the drum deposit is refundable.
- Standards: SABS-marked cable to the relevant SANS standard, not unmarked imports.
- Delivery: lead time, delivery to site and offloading of heavy drums.
What to include in your request
- Type of conduit (rigid PVC, flexible or steel) and the diameter
- Total length or number of lengths, plus fittings and boxes
- Where it goes: walls, slab, ceiling, outdoors or underground
- Supply only, or supply with installation and wiring
- Site address and when you need delivery
