XLPE Cable for Durban homes and businesses

In Durban, XLPE cable is used for large factory and mall feeders, mini-substation connections and private MV networks on estates, mines and farms. Independent cable suppliers and specialist contractors serving KwaZulu-Natal can quote for LV or MV XLPE cable on drums, plus jointing, terminations, testing and installation.

Want to know more first? Our XLPE cable guide covers the options, what affects the price and what to check before you order.

Cabling conditions in Durban

Durban's humid, salty air is hard on anything electrical. Lugs and terminations near the beachfront, the Bluff and Umhlanga oxidise quickly, and moisture finds its way into poorly sealed joints, so tinned lugs, sealed glands and IP-rated enclosures are worth specifying. Summer thunderstorms bring frequent lightning, which makes surge protection and sound earthing important. The port, the south Durban refineries and industrial areas such as Prospecton and Jacobs use large volumes of armoured and XLPE cable. eThekwini supplies most of the metro, and apartment blocks and townhouse complexes are steadily upgrading old sub-mains and adding backup power.

Typical XLPE cable requests in the area come from:

Coastal properties: coastal plants choose sealed sheaths and protected terminations against salt and moisture
Factories and workshops: factories use XLPE cable for transformer feeds and large motor supplies
Complexes and body corporates: complexes link the mini-substation to unit meter kiosks with XLPE cable
Homeowners: large homes and estates use LV XLPE cable for long, heavily loaded main supplies
Offices: office blocks run XLPE risers and main feeders to busbar chambers
Data and network installs: data centres use XLPE feeders between transformers, generators and main switchgear
