Cabling conditions in Pietermaritzburg

Pietermaritzburg lies in a bowl in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, an area known for frequent summer lightning. Strikes regularly damage appliances, gate motors and inverters, so surge protection, good earth electrodes and correctly bonded metalwork are common requests. As the provincial capital, the city has many government offices and schools, and Victorian brick buildings in the centre often carry outdated wiring. Msunduzi Municipality supplies most of the city, while the dairy and timber farms around Howick and Camperdown rely on Eskom rural lines and long feeds to milking sheds and pumps. An aluminium rolling mill and other factories need heavy industrial cabling.

Typical XLPE cable requests in the area come from:

Homeowners: large homes and estates use LV XLPE cable for long, heavily loaded main supplies
Municipal and public works: municipalities use 11 kV XLPE cable between substations and ring main units
Offices: office blocks run XLPE risers and main feeders to busbar chambers
Farms and smallholdings: large farms run private MV lines to pump stations and packhouses with XLPE cable
Factories and workshops: factories use XLPE cable for transformer feeds and large motor supplies
